Henry Moore, the great British sculptor, propounded the doctrine of “truth to material” as the first necessity of a sculptor. By this Moore meant that the chosen material must be respected and not made to do what its nature and character cannot do. “The sculptor ought to be the master of his material. Only, not a cruel master.”
Three sculptors — Ferdie Cacnio, Níccolo José, and Marge Organo — working in three different materials (brass, wood, and glass) liberate the forms they feel they contain, in an exhibition titled “Tri-Angles: Critical Elements,” opening at Art Anton on June 23.
Ferdie Cacnio wields brass into the finest filigrees of trees and the female nude. Níccolo José retrieves old Philippine hardwoods from which he creates his sinuous functional sculptures. Marge Organo infuses deeply radiant colors in her shimmering geometric glass blocks.
